Will Bill Parcells find his way back to the sidelines?

I understand that the circumstances surrounding Bill Parcells taking the head coaching job with the Saints is just for this upcoming season only. With a personality that wouldn’t embrace a long term commitment and having the opportunity to help a friend, you would think that Parcells is the perfect fit for this job? Not exactly the case. I have three main why Parcells is not a good fit for this Saints team.

The first reason that Bill Parcells is not a good fit for the New Orleans Saints is because this team doesn’t fit his style of play. Let’s look on the offensive of side first. Parcells would love a guy like Drew Brees at QB but Parcells is a guy that does not like to take many chances and likes to pound and ground the rock. Just look at all of his stops. He won two Super Bowls with the Giants by running the football, controlling the clock, and playing outstanding defense. The Patriots had the same formula with Curtis Martin at RB, and again with the Jets. The first year with the Cowboys, Parcells used the same formula and got them to the playoffs. The problem is that the Saints are not built to pound the rock all day. Everything is set up by Brees airing it out then balancing it off with their run game. Don’t know how comfortable Parcells will be with a different philosophy.

The second reason is because Parcells strength is defense and he runs a 3-4. The Saints have the personnel of a 4-3 which they have been running for years and just hired Steve Spagnola who runs a 4-3 defense. Parcells could overcome this but it is one other issue that just doesn’t fit for him. He would need to change his way of thinking to fit the style of the team.

The last reason that this Saints team doesn’t fit Parcells style is because he may not get the same respect from the players as he has had in the past. With everyone knowing that he would only be there for a year, some players may feel that they don’t have to answer to him and that Coach Payton is really running the ship. In previous stops, Parcells would take over a team that was in total disarray and turn them into either Super Bowl Champs or contenders. With this Saints team being a few years removed from winning a Super Bowl, some of the veteran players may not take to Parcells strong willed personality as other teams have done in the past.

Bill Parcells had Sean Payton as his assistant for years. They have a great relationship as friends but make no mistake, they are two different coaches. One wants to grind out the game with taking limited chances while the other plays loose and runs a throw first offense. With that, this is not a good fit for Parcells but he can still continue being a good friend to Payton.
